Infant is the first two years including neonate or not ?

Neonate refers to an infant in the first 28 days of life.
An infant refers to a baby in the first year (12 months) of life.
A 2 year old is a toddler.

Is it true once you have a pre term baby you always will?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Is it true that if you have a baby early , your next baby will be even earlier?? my son is three years old and when i was pregnant with him my water broke at 37 weeks. Now i am 34 weeks pregnant and very paranoid about having this one early.. or even earlier then 37 weeks. Also does any one know what health risk a baby would have if she was born at 34 weeks? Thanks for any answers.

NO that is not true at all, i think your odds go up, but it doesnt mean that it is going to happen….and a baby at 34 weeks will be able to servive, but will need to be in the nicu for a whiel and might need help with breathing at first, but if you go into early labor, and they know you are going to deliver, they will give you a steroid/hormone shot that will rapidly develop the babies luns, so their will be less chances of concerns at birth(lower the severeity of the babies concerns of breathing) at this point everything is developed and the lungs are the last thing to develop, and 37 weeks isnt considered premature, anything after 37 weeks is considered fll term! good luck and Ive know people that had a really premature baby(22 weeks) the baby was bairly a pound(17 yrs almost 18yrs ago) my cousin, and she is fine, and dont you think technology is better now then 18 yrs ago?? so i woulnd stress over it, and in fact, all stress will do is make your chances of a preterm labor more apt to happen, i wish you luck and hope all is well with you and baby!

Does teenage pregnancy cause a higher risk of prematurity?

teenage pregnancy is a result of immaturity!

Can premature birth cause mental illnesses later in life?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

So I was born two months early, I weighed two pounds.

And now I have been diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and early schizophrenia.

I was wondering if maybe my premature birth could have caused this.

Anything could have caused this. Genetics, Your premature birth..

If triplets are born, but one passes away…?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

If triplets are born but one of the babies passes on due to prematurity or some other natural cause, what are the two remaining babies called?

Are they still considered triplets or are they now twins?

They were born triplets, they’ll always be triplets legally. As a parent I’d say twins so I didn’t have to discuss a baby’s death anytime I met new people.

what to do for neonate who has unilateral hearing loss?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

My newborn baby who has left external ear deformity and by hearing test after delivery he has loss of hearing in this left ear.i want to know what to do? is there any urgency in checking the other systems like the kidney, heart,…etc. what about follow up? what about aiding him? what about complications

Hi Dodo

Here are some answers and remedies.

Cause
1.It has been proven that certain types of drugs, including aspirin, can cause hearing loss. Antibiotics such as kanamycin, dihydrostreptomycin, and gentamycin can contribute to deafness. The side and after effects of inorganic drugs take their toll on the body. This is why we prefer to work with herbs and foods which operate synergistically (in harmony) with the body.

2.When a child cannot hear well, it may be from several causes, i.e., injury and concussion, nerve-loss, ears plugged with wax and/or debris.

Herbal Aids
1.See formula using sassafras oil and olive oil used in the ears.

2.Ground Ivy: Drop expressed juice of ground ivy into the ears or eyes frequently.

3.Dr. Christopher’s B&B Tincture and General Program for Deafness: In many cases, a person can have her hearing restored by following Dr. Christopher’s program. One patient had lost her hearing, and could only hear if someone screamed at her when she had her hearing aids turned up full. She couldn’t use the phone anymore, and felt discouraged with life in general.

She decided to use the B.&B. tincture and garlic oil routine. With an eyedropper, you insert into each ear at night four to six drops of oil of garlic and four to six drops of B.&B. tincture, plugging ears overnight with cotton, six days a week, resting on the seventh day. This can continue for four to six months, or as needed. On the seventh day, flush the ears with a small ear syringe using warm apple cider vinegar and distilled water half and half.

Dr. Christopher commented that many cases where the person was considered legally deaf, by using this program they were able to hear again. Hundreds of people have thrown their hearing aids away after rebuilding their hearing with this simple program.

This same program is used for earaches and roaring in the head, ringing in the ears, etc. Dr. Christopher originally got this formula when he was working with an epileptic. He was searching for something that could really help the case, and received the formula by inspiration, as if a voice were saying it to him. An old gentleman thought that it might help his hearing, so he put it in his ears, too. In that same household, one of the little children had a terrible earache one night. The mother used this combination in the ears, and the pain stopped and the infection cleared up. Many children have been relieved from this simple program of garlic oil and B.&B. tincture. [EWH p.137] With some folks we have seen the hearing restored and hearing aids discarded in just a few months. In other cases, this program must be followed for far longer periods of time before results are noticed. No two people heal alike, so be patient and follow instructions, then see what happens!

4.Marjoram: The juice of Marjoram, both wild and cultivated, dropped into the ears helped deafness, pain, noise, and ringing.

5.Mullein: The oil is often used in the ears to relieve earache. The ointment, which is made from the oil, is used in the same way. We have had earaches in our family which resulted from congested lymph glands and colds. Although we treated the problem with garlic oil and B&B tincture, the problem did not clear up. By inserting oil of Mullein into the ear, however, we were able to stop the irritation in the ear as well as in the accompanying glands. The oil can be inserted into the ears to soften hard ear wax, or to moisten the area where the ear wax is insufficient; hearing losses due to ear wax have sometimes been thus alleviated.

6.Ear Candles: The cautious use of "ear candles" can help clear the wax. Ear candles are an old invention. A pointed dowel rod is wrapped with a cotton or linen strip of cloth which has been dipped in melted paraffin wax. The rod should be about 8 inches long and about 3/4ths of an inch thick. When the paraffin hardens, a long, thin, cone-shaped form will result and the dowel rod can be removed. The pointed end of the linen cone is put into the ear canal and the other end is lit. The person should be sitting upright so the wax doesn’t drip into the ear. To avoid injury, be sure to put the fire out before the burning candle reaches the head. When the ear candle is removed and unwrapped, it is usually filled with ear wax. The Amish people use these candles and it is a tradition with them.

Testimonials
1.Hearing Program: I have four other patients on the program for hearing loss and all are making fine progress. One, however, is really amazing.

This patient has been getting a new pair of hearing aids every year for the last twelve years, they’re always giving her a stronger pair. The right one she has full blast and hears nothing–she has been diagnosed as nerve deafness.

After only five days she has turned this right hearing aid almost completely off and can hear the radio. She is the happiest woman I have ever seen. by the way, she drives to my office in Chicago twice a week nearly fifty miles each way, even in blizzards and could hardly hear the horns blow on the other cars. She is an amazed woman today."

2.Hearing Restored After 39 Years: A good many years ago- probably about 1940 my husband was struck by lightening which left him very hard of hearing. We tried several times to have him fitted with hearing aids, but no one seemed to think these would help his problem. Then in about 1973 Bell Tone fitted him, which helped some. In March 1979 we tried the herbal tincture as per your instructions: 6 days, 5 drops oil of garlic, then 5 drops herbal tincture; then the 7th day the cider vinegar and distilled water. Immediately he said to me, "Why! The clock is ticking!" From that day on he has not needed his hearing aids (over $1,100)! We did continue the procedure for another week. We need to know should we continue, and if so, for how long do you suggest? We continue to Praise God and give Him our thanks for this healing blessing. We want to thank you also, for our publication, and the research you have done, that has been such a blessing to us.

3.Hearing and Tic Improves with B&B Tincture: At the time of this writing, there is no surgical cure for nerve hearing loss. The causes are fetal damage, trauma at birth, infections, drugs, thyroid disease, diabetes, injuries, noise exposure, or nerve deterioration from age or malnutrition. Just last month, a woman said to us, "I wish they (medical science) would hurry and find a cure for nerve deterioration." We said, "For the nerves in the body?" She said, "No. For the nerves of the ear! I’m having a terrible time with hearing loss and it’s getting worse. It’s driving me crazy!" We told her that if she didn’t have eardrum breakage, there were some herbal nervines that could be used directly in the ear as ear drops. She agreed to try the B and B tincture. As she spoke, her face exhibited a spastic dance of small nervous tics. A month later, on the B and B tincture, her hearing began to gain momentum while the nervous tics faded into the background.

4.Deaf Since 1 Year Old: Thanks to your formulas, I was able to cure several persons known to me. Also, my son, deaf since I year old, now 30 years old, has improved his hearing thanks to B&B Tincture.

Best of health to you

Cheers

Is the Hepatitis B vaccination dangerous for my premature baby?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

I dont have the virus. My NICU says that my baby should be vaccinated just for the sake of added protection. She’s only about 35 weeks gestation. Can this vaccination harm her? I don’t trust the hospital to give me the real low down.

I just read the full prescribing information leaflets for the two commonly used Hep-B vaccines used in the US and it says nothing about safety for premature babies -neither that it is safe or unsafe.

As near as I can tell the US guidelines are to give it to ALL babies as long as they weigh 18kg (4 lbs). In Canada its only given to baby’s of infected mothers (and sometimes if dad or another caregiver is infected) AND the baby weighs more than 2 kg (almost 4 1/2 lbs). In the US preemies are screened to see if they need an additional dose, in Canada preemies that are vaccinated at birth all get an additional dose.

Its up to you, only you can weigh the risks of being unvaccinated (or unvaccinated until 2 months or whenever) against the risks of vaccinating a preemie (which aren’t documented as far as I can tell). However this vaccine is considered safe during pregnancy

This says that the baby must weigh 1.8 kg (4lbs)

Premature babies are more prone to infections and
in general should be immunised at the normal time.
Babies born less than 32 weeks gestation may have a
lower immune response to hepatitis B vaccine. These
babies should have a blood test after their 4th dose
of hepatitis B vaccine to check if they have adequate
protection and if not an extra booster dose of hepa-
titis B vaccine will be offered at 12 months of age

In addition to the routine vaccinations, infants
born to Hepatitis B infected mothers are given
HBIG and started on the Hepatitis B vaccine
series, using thimerosal-free vaccine. The HBIG
and Hep B vaccine should be given as soon as
possible regardless of gestational age, because of
the high risk of the disease. If the infant weighs
less than 2 kg (2000gms), they will require an
additional dose of vaccine that should be
administered 2 months after the 3
rd
dose. These
infants should be serologically tested for anti-
HBs and HBsAg 1-3 months after they complete
their Hep B vaccinations. In Alberta, we don’t
routinely immunize infants of uninfected
mothers, but some other provinces do. In that
situation, it is better to wait until the premature
infant reaches either 2 kg or 2 months of age,
because of the possible lower seroconversion
rate and the low risk of disease. Alberta does

Maggie gave birth 2 a premature infant. What can the nurse tell her about the associated developmental outcomes?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

a. socioeconomic status is unrelated to developmental outcomes
b. premature infants are not considered high risk infants
c. the more premature babies weigh and the closer to term they are born, the less risk of negative outcomes
d. premature babies with no visible problems are at equal risk as premature babies with visible problems

C - I think it’s C because doctors try to get the baby to stay in the mom for as long as possible….the longer the baby stays in utero the better chance of being healthy and less risks it has in the world.

How long did your 32/33 week preemie stay in the hospital?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

I’m concerned about pre-term labor as I am 32 weeks and have a history of pre-term labor. If you gave birth to a preemie at 32 or 33 weeks can you please tell me about how long your babie’s hospital stay was and any complications that were faced? Thanks. I had a 34 and 35 week’er with no problems but this is the earliest I have had these pre-term labor signs.

My son will be 7 years old this June, but he was born at 31 weeks. Preterm labor actually started at the end of 28 weeks, and was able to be stopped with a four day stay in the hospital and a magnesium drip until the end of 29 weeks when the contractions started again, but stopped the same way. I was given steroids to improve his lungs in case he didn’t make it to full term and put on bed rest. It was much better that he was born at 31 weeks than 28, but he still had to stay in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) ward of the hosptial for a month. He was born at 4 pounds, 3 ounces and went down to 3 pounds, 12 ounces. He left the hospital at 5 pounds. He had a feeding tube for a few weeks, but my husband and I were able to try bottle feeding him during that time. He wasn’t able to breast feed at all (I did try, but he couldn’t get the hang of it, so I pumped and gave him the bottles). He was jaundiced for a few days and had to have the biliruben lights put in his incubator. He would also forget to breathe and was put on caffeine, which would stimulate his brain to remember. When he left the hospital, he came home with an apenic monitor to let us know when he would stop breathing. That lasted a few weeks. When he was home, he would projectile vomit a half hour after every feeding and began losing weight. At one and a half months old, he was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis, a problem common in premie boys where the muscle from the esophogas to the stomach is too small causing projectile vomiting. He had surgery to fix it at two months old. He had to have special visits at home to check his motor and developmental skills until he was two to make sure everything was on schedule. Now he’s perfectly healthy, aside from the seasonal asthma that he inherited from my husband. He’s also one of the top students in his first grade class, but has to go to the school’s speech therapy lessons once a week for his "sh" and "l" sounds. The later the baby’s born, the better off they are, so hopefully with some bed rest, you can hold off for a few more weeks. My doctor said it’s more likely the one I’m pregnant with now will also be early, possibly even earlier than my son, but the goal for me is 32 weeks. That’s what doctor’s seem to think is the best time for a premie, when everything’s fully developed. Good luck to you, and I hope everything works out fine.
