I need sewing tips on sewing neck for preemie gown, is there a trick to it?

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

I have a hard time trying to turn under the neck so that there is no raw edge. I make burial gowns with matching blankets for the parents. The neck area is so small. Most of the time I sew a facing around the neck and turn that. Any suggestions would help.

Sorry but the facing is the only way unless you want to do it by hand or top stitch with decorative stitches

What age did your preemie start to get on track developmentally? And how premature was your baby?

He was 5 weeks early and he developed about 5 weeks late of what the "average" baby would go, he walked at 11 months though and i think that was pretty average, but he is 21 months and still doesnt talk

What developmental difficulties can a 26 week preemie face growing up?

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

If a child is born at 26 weeks gestation, is the child likely to have many health issues? If so, what? What about learning disabilities? Mental retardation?

I haven’t had a preemie myself, but I have a cousin who was born at about that time and she’s 16 now. You would *never* know she was a preemie to look at her. I’ve heard that most preemies catch up by age two, but again, not personal experience.

How long did your 32/33 week preemie stay in the hospital?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

I’m concerned about pre-term labor as I am 32 weeks and have a history of pre-term labor. If you gave birth to a preemie at 32 or 33 weeks can you please tell me about how long your babie’s hospital stay was and any complications that were faced? Thanks. I had a 34 and 35 week’er with no problems but this is the earliest I have had these pre-term labor signs.

My son will be 7 years old this June, but he was born at 31 weeks. Preterm labor actually started at the end of 28 weeks, and was able to be stopped with a four day stay in the hospital and a magnesium drip until the end of 29 weeks when the contractions started again, but stopped the same way. I was given steroids to improve his lungs in case he didn’t make it to full term and put on bed rest. It was much better that he was born at 31 weeks than 28, but he still had to stay in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) ward of the hosptial for a month. He was born at 4 pounds, 3 ounces and went down to 3 pounds, 12 ounces. He left the hospital at 5 pounds. He had a feeding tube for a few weeks, but my husband and I were able to try bottle feeding him during that time. He wasn’t able to breast feed at all (I did try, but he couldn’t get the hang of it, so I pumped and gave him the bottles). He was jaundiced for a few days and had to have the biliruben lights put in his incubator. He would also forget to breathe and was put on caffeine, which would stimulate his brain to remember. When he left the hospital, he came home with an apenic monitor to let us know when he would stop breathing. That lasted a few weeks. When he was home, he would projectile vomit a half hour after every feeding and began losing weight. At one and a half months old, he was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis, a problem common in premie boys where the muscle from the esophogas to the stomach is too small causing projectile vomiting. He had surgery to fix it at two months old. He had to have special visits at home to check his motor and developmental skills until he was two to make sure everything was on schedule. Now he’s perfectly healthy, aside from the seasonal asthma that he inherited from my husband. He’s also one of the top students in his first grade class, but has to go to the school’s speech therapy lessons once a week for his "sh" and "l" sounds. The later the baby’s born, the better off they are, so hopefully with some bed rest, you can hold off for a few more weeks. My doctor said it’s more likely the one I’m pregnant with now will also be early, possibly even earlier than my son, but the goal for me is 32 weeks. That’s what doctor’s seem to think is the best time for a premie, when everything’s fully developed. Good luck to you, and I hope everything works out fine.

Has anyone had a preemie with a grade 3 bleed on the brain?

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

I am scared out of my mind that my daughter may be slow, she was 2 pounds and born at 30 weeks. She is grade 1 on the left side and progressed from grade 2 on the right side to grade 3.
How did your children turn out?
Please answer if you know anything about this.

this is a serious condition and is a question for the neonatologist caring for your daughter. I understand that you are looking for reassurance from other mothers, but I would concentrate on what the professionals have to say.

how many months can you start your preemie on soft foods

Friday, November 6th, 2009

how many months should i wait to feed my preemie baby soft foods (gerber food)

You normally go by the corrected age with a premie. So, if a full-term baby starts at 6 months (the usual recommendation), you would wait until baby had reached the ‘corrected’ age of 6 months with a premie.

(The only other thing to consider is that premies often run low on iron stores earlier than full-term babies, so MAY need outside sources of iron sooner. If baby is formula fed this isn’t a concern [commercial formula contains plenty of iron] but if he’s breastfed, he may need iron supplements or iron-containing foods a bit earlier. (Breastmilk contains small amounts of iron, and while the iron is well absorbed, it MAY not be enough for some premies after they are a few months old.)

For Parents of Preemies: How old was your preemie when they reached their developmental milestones?

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Rolling over, sitting up, crawling, walking, talking, etc.

Preemies may develop at their adjusted age (the age they would be if they had been born on their due date). However, if they are very early preemies they very well may lag behind their adjusted age. It’s very traumatic for a preemie to be born early. The earlier they are, the more likely to be affected — generally speaking.

Rarely, early preemies may develop on par with their full term peers. Sometimes early preemies will have problems sitting because of low muscle tone in their trunk, but high muscle tone in their legs. So they may cruise/walk before they can sit well. (That was the case with this 23.5 wk preemie here: www.preemies.us He could walk at 8 months adj, which is very unusual, but his sitting was wobbly for a long time.)

If you are asking for your baby, go by milestones in a baby book, by adjusted age, then adjust further if your baby was very early or had a rough nicu stay. Be sure to contact Early Intervention and other programs that can help your baby. (I’ve spoken with hundreds of preemie parents over the past 13 yrs.)

Anyone else with a preemie hanging out at home for RSV season?

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

If so, how are you doing the holidays? No one in my family seems to understand quite how serious this is, and feelings are getting hurt because we’re opting out of certain annual gatherings/or modifying the way we do things…I know we’re doing the right thing and people are trying ti understand, but I can tell they think we’re being paranoid. Anyone else dealing with something similar?

Absolutely!! My baby was just born on the 29th, and she’s 6 weeks early. She’s been in the Special Care Nursery for two weeks now, and should be going home by the end of the week (FINALLY!!). My parents (especially my mother) cant understand why her and my dad cant travel here and visit the baby at our house for the holidays. My baby’s doctor has advised that with her being so early, not to allow her to interact with anyone who doesnt live in the home until she hits her would’ve been due date. That is the first week of January. She said that its too great of a risk to the baby to chance it because of the RSV factor. My husband’s family understands about all this, but mine is freaking out on me about it and acting like it’s something personal against them.

So, I completely understand how you are feeling.
