Is there much difference in the size of pampers swaddlers in a preemie and a newborn size?

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

I heard there wasn’t..So if I have a 4 or 5 lbs baby, would it make a difference if I just started out with newborn?

My daughter wasn’t even really a preemie, she was born at 37w6d, and was 6lbs 4oz. I thought the newborn ones were a pain to deal with, with the umbilical cord stump. I had to fold them over. So I figured I would try the Preemie ones, and they were great. I just got a pack of like 72, and then when I ran out, she was ready for the bigger ones! But yes, there is a difference, so if you think the newborn ones are too big, then definitely get a pack of the preemie, just don’t get a ton, then when the stump falls off, it doesn’t matter if they’re a little big!

My preemie baby 6wks early just moved to a stage two nipple?

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

I am pumping every three hours because he would not latch on. He is now three months and does not seem to like the nipples on the bottles. Should I try to breast feed him again?

Wouldn’t hurt to try again. Did he used to latch on? Maybe you need to show him again. Suggest seeking the help of a nurse or lactation consultant to review the latching "technique."

If that doesn’t work then try a different style nipple or different size.

Please explain a heart murmur or a hole in the heart - having to do with a preemie infant ?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Baby is three days old.
Thank you to Meganregina ! Your explaination is very helpful .

Hard to explain, but here goes. When baby is in the womb they have a hole in their heart between the two upper chambers. This allowed blood flow to redirect and bypass the lungs in order to circulate and deliver oxygen to the body. After birth, your blood takes in oxygen through the lungs. Before birth babies don’t need that function. They get their oxygenated blood through the umbilical cord. The hole usually closes up before birth allowing the body to circulate properly. Sometimes the hole doesn’t close all of the way, letting the blood back flow into a chamber that it isn’t supposed to be in. Usually it will fix itself with time. If it doesn’t, surgery will be required.

A murmur is the whooshing sound that you can hear with a stethoscope. The whooshing sound is the actual back flow.

In a heart without a hole, a murmur can still be present. The heart has 4 chambers with valves in between them to prevent back flow. if the valves are weak, back flow can occur and you would hear the murmur sound

Clear as mud huh?

My sister is a foster mother adopting a preemie baby. Looking to throw a baby shower for her any suggestions?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Im looking to throw a baby shower for her as she has no supplies for the preemie. Have looked into throwing an "adoption" shower but the adoption could take up to a year.

Do it just like you would for any other shower…..I would try to throw it BEFORE the baby comes home so she won’t be worried about the premie being around a lot of people and their germs!!

Pick a theme….perhaps coordinate it with the bedding set she has picked out!

Register for her or encourage her to register.

Pick a date and then send out invites at least 2-3 weeks before the shindig!!

Enforce RSVP…..makes food planning and activities better if you know how many to expect!!

UNIQUE ACTIVITIES….GO HERE: http://www.diapercakesbybecca.com/ShowerActivities

UNIQUE CENTERPIECE….GO HERE: http://www.diapercakesbybecca.com

Just treat it like any other baby shower….because this baby WILL be a part of your family and a part of the family of friends.

Have fun…..CELEBRATE BABY!!

You’d be better of calling social services at the hospital. They should know.

What is a good "Preemie" carrier to get?

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

I am looking for a preemie infant carrier for my son but haven’t really found anything. The only ones that I have come across are for full term babies only. And I really don’t want one of those "sling" things. I want more of a front carrier. Mom’s and Dad’s, if you have had a preemie, what do you recommend?

I had a preemie too. She is 2 1/2 now but I never used a carrier. It does seem like for now the sling may be your only option. However, I suggest you go to the March of Dimes Share Home page and post this question there. There are thousands of parents who have been where you are. Another suggestion is if they do not yet exist for preemies, it sounds like a great business idea. 7% of babies born today are preemies… I am pregnant again and while I will be recieving Progestrone shots I still expect to deliver early again. You have aproxamitly 4 to 5 months to invent the preemie carrier. Because even the littlest ones want to be close to you.

When a child is stillborn what is done with the body. What if the child is a micro preemie?

Friday, October 16th, 2009

I have a friend who gave birth to triplet preemies. They were born about 3 months early. I wanted to ask her, but…..it’s such an awful question to ask her. I even wonder if she named them and all that. She always refers to them as the boys and the girl.

Anyway, if any of you know anyone who gave birth to a still born or preemies who died, what happens?

If they are micro-premies, in most states they are placed in a warmer and wrapped in a blanket and left to pass on their own (this is if there is 90% chance of death). If there are partially formed lungs, they might be put on a ventilator, it is up to the mother.

Stillborns, in my experience, if they were closer to term, were buried and given a funeral.

If they were early termination (like 2nd tri) then they were disposed of as if it was a dead body. Or donated to science.

Can a preemie breastfeed at 33 weeks gestational age?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

my daughter is currently 33 weeks gestational age. She is showing signs like rooting and sucking when nothing is in her mouth. Could this mean she is readyto breast feed at such a young age?

I am a NICU nurse and know that a babys suck/swallow reflex develops at approx 34 weeks. You dont have to wait until 34 weeks to have just breast contact with her. It is a good idea to have her just near the breast smelling and even licking. Make sure you continue to express every 3 hours as every bit of breast milk you are able to express is the most important thing you can give to her. Good luck with everything.

Where can I find preemie bottle nipples to feed my 2 week old great dane puppy?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

We picked him up on Saturday and the stage 1 slow flow nipples are to slow but the stage 2 are to fast that when he drinks from them he aspirates a little and we have to rub his back to get him to cough it out of his kungs. With the slow flow he gets very frustrated and then refuses to eat. Any suggestions would be a great help. Thanks
The reason that he is not with his mother is because she was producing bad milk. Her owners were not very clean people smoking in the house and what not. He was infested with fleas and was very dehydrated. So I am not trying to kill my dog I just know that he will be better off here than he would be at their house. Plus they were feeding him really watered down canned food in a bottle not even formula.

I tube fed my last litter of puppies when they were that little because their mom didn’t develop enough milk. 2 wk old puppies may not be able to suck on a bottle - and tube feeding is a fast & easy way to get them the nutrition they need so they can start getting stronger & will be able to wean sooner.
You can find tube feeding instructions on the internet if you do a search. That way there is no risk of him aspirating the formula & developing pneumonia.
Two wks is definitely too young to be away from mom - but in this situation you couldn’t help it.
At 3 - 4 wks, depending upon the pup’s maturity, you can start him on semi solid foods. I soak dry dog food in Esbilac til it’s completely mushy. Then add a bit of stage 1 chicken baby food & introduce it the puppy on a spoon that he can lick from.
Don’t give him a whole plate of it cuz he’ll stick his nose in it & inhale it.
Good luck.
