Knitting patterns for premature babies?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Can anyone tell me where I can get knitting patterns in 3 ply for premature babies. Or is there an "idiot proof" way of adapting an existing pattern in 4 ply or DK. I am not very good at working out the tension etc. I know how to do the tension swatch, but I’m not very good at comparing one with another of a different tension to work out sizing. Can anyone help please. I have been given some lovely 3 ply yarn. which I would love to knit up.

Here are a few.

As for swapping out yarn–you do a swatch–figuring out how many stitches = how many inches wide and tall. Then you figure out how wide and tall it’s supposed to be in the pattern you have and substitute the number of stitches you’d use using the yarn you have.

Why are premature babies more at risk from sudden infant death syndrom than babies born at the correct time?

Need a little bit of scientific explanation
Need a bit of scientific explanation: to do with foetal oxygen, covering of air ways, and the advice that is given to mothers.

Because they are preemie’s their internal systems are still forming. Things like their lungs and digestive system are not ready to be on their own. The mother supplies the nutrition and oxygen. These are a hard thing for the tiny infant to handle. The less problems at birth, the less risk of
SIDS.

What do you think of the link of autism and premature babies?

Does anyone here have an autistic child that was born premature? I was reading this article on yahoo this morning, and wondered.

The biggest reason that more people are diagnosed today is because they have broadened the criteria. Instead of letting a child have any natural quirks they just slap a label on them. Makes me sick to be honest.

It appears there is some sort of trigger and nobody can seem to figure out what that is.

I’m not convinced vaccines have caused it but the crap they put in some of those vaccines can’t possibly be good for you anyway. I also don’t agree with loading up such immature immune systems with 4 & 5 diseases at once. We’ve spaced our sons further apart — and yes he’s up to date.

My son was born at 35 weeks and has some quirks and sensory issues but is not autistic. Also 35 weeks obviously wouldn’t be considered extremely premature.

Reading the answer above me makes me want to add this:
When my son was 12-16 months old or so, we were concerned someone was going to start throwing around the autism label with our son. He certainly had some of items on the checklist but he has since outgrown almost all of them. The things he is left with are quite mild.

Do doctors allow premature babies to breastfeed or are they too small to take to the breast?

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Also if a woman had open heart surgery as a baby due to being born premature could pregnancy put stress on her heart? Asking because I was born 24.5 weeks premature and had to have open heart surgery shortly after my birth because one of my heart valves wasn’t closed. Still have the scar.

Having a valve surgery shouldn’t be a major issue during pregnancy, but talk to your doctor.

As for breastfeeding, it totally depends on how premature the baby is. 24-30 weeks they will have feeding tubes and can be fed expressed breast milk, and only be fed very small amounts because of the risk of damaging the immature intestines. They try to avoid a condition called "necrotizing enterocolitis", which means essentially part of the bowel dies because of disrupted blood flow to the immature bowel. Sometimes surgery is necessary to cut out part of the dead bowel tissue.

Once they hit about 30-32 weeks they usually will allow breastfeeding attempts, but generally the baby is still too immature and cannot coordinate the suck-swallow-breathe process. By 34-36 weeks these abilities mature and the baby will do much better.

Are there any support groups for single mothers with premature babies?

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

I’m in the Las Vegas area and my girlfriend feels that there’s nowhere she can go to get help. Any ideas?

Have her join http://www.cafemom.com. There are TONS of groups on there and probably 20 or so that are just about mom’s of premies. Infact, I’ll check and see just how many….There are 67 groups for moms with premies. I’m sure quite a few of those mothers are single. Have her join!

How many parents have had premature babies?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

My son was born 9 weeks early. If you’ve had one preemie what are the odds of having another?

lots of first baby’s are preemies mostly because your body isn’t use to carry a child. My first was almost 2 1/2 months early and i did everything they sad. but my second baby was right on time. And don’t worry in most cases a doctor can determine if the baby will be early especially if there’s a history of it and be ready to give you safe medication to keep the baby were it needs to be for as long as possible.

Where can I find nipples for premature babies?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

I’ve been looking for them but the ones I’ve found are the same size as regular nipples the only thing that changes is the flow ..I need ones that are actually smaller in size because regular ones are too long …does any one know where I could find them?
thank you.

We got ours from the hospital. They were very happy to give us handfuls of the disposable nipples. Although considered disposable, we just washed and re-used them. They worked great.

Call your doctor and tell him/her that you are having trouble finding nipples. Since the baby is used to the ones from the hospital, ask specifically for those. I can’t imagine there would be a problem. If you had a good relationship with the nurses in the NICU, go there and ask for some of the disposable preemie nipples.

I need help on an informative speech about premature babies. Any ideas would help! Thank you!?

I am doing an informative speech on premature babies, but don’t know where to start, I’m having a hard time trying to figure out my outline and the whole thing! Any help on this particular subject would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Preemies have so much going on, it’ll be best to pinpoint one subject and go with that.
Some ideas -
*Growth problems,
*Adjusted age (considering them to be the age they would be if they had been born on their due date),
*Using low lighting and noise in the nicu (nicu environment),
*Kangaroo care (skin to skin contact) and how it helps preemies,
*Parental stress.

Good luck!
