How do you think these factors affect the ability of an infant to regulate its body temperature?

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

a premature infant typically lacks subcutaneous adipose tissue. Also, the surface area of an infant’s small body is relatively large compared to its volume.

It seems like the baby doesn’t have the means to generate energy. The lack of adipose tissue is a huge disadvantage. Its main role is to store energy as fat, act as cushion and insulation. most animals do not depend on body weight but on the amt of body fat. With all of this surface area being subjected to environments its not ready for, survival looks bleak. The stored fat would be crucial for thermal regulation.

Need help with what to do with a constipated infant?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

We have an infant here who’ll be 3 weeks old tomorrow.
(He was born Nov 24, 3 weeks premature)
He’s having a lot of trouble pooing, he’s trying to push, but he’s getting a little frustrated. Is there anything we can do to help him get it out?
Also; he has a twin brother who’s growing a lot faster than him, is it normal for him to not be growing as fast?

When my daughter was about 1 weeks old she was constipated too. I called the nurse’s station @ our local hospital and talked to an old nurse. She told me to put a teaspoonful of dark Karo syrup in her next bottle. I did and she was pooping that very afternoon. If you are skeptical about taking this advice, call your nurses station or even consult your doctor and take their advice. They say baby stools vary greatly, my doctor told me not to worry if my daughter hadn’t defecated in 3 days. This didn’t sit well with me, how would he like to be in that much discomfort? Good luck!

How much should I get paid for caring for twin premature infants?

I live in South Jersey and have 4 years experience as a nanny. I have over 10 years experience in child care altogether. I also have my CDA. How much should I expect hourly? Weekly?
I live in South Jersey and have 4 years experience as a nanny. I have over 10 years experience in child care altogether. I also have my CDA. How much should I expect hourly? Weekly? I plan to nanny these children as a live-out nanny full time.
They are now 6 months

I would say 15.50 dollars and hour for a full time live out nanny. If you worked 45 hours a week which is 6 hours and 40 minutes a day working Monday - Sunday. Which equals to 697.50 dollars a week and 2999.25 dollars a month. I would think that would be a good rate for a wealthier family. For a not so wealthy family I would say 14 dollars an hour.

Premature infants have trouble breathing. Why?

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Why?

Most of the problems lie with the lack of a surface chemical in the lungs. The alveoli of the lungs, those little balloon-like endings, should have tremendous surface tension. Imagine what it would be like to try to inflate thousands, if not millions of little balloons at once.

So why don’t normal babies have that problem? The answer is they have a chemical that reduces surface tension and makes it easier to inflate the alveoli. That chemical is akin to soap which lowers surface tension. Premature babies often lack that chemical.

The disease is called Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Is it safe for a pregnant woman to drink infant formula?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

I would think not….

Aluminum

<5-45 ug/l in breast milk
557-2,346 ug/l in soy formula
Aluminum interferes with cellular metabolic processes and information transfer from DNA

Silicon

55.45ng/ml in milk of mothers with silicone implants
51.05ng/ml in milk of mothers without implants
746-13,811 ng/ml in 26 brands of formula tested for silicon
The effect of large amounts of silicon on an infant is unknown

Cadmium

Cadmium is a highly toxic metal that can cause kidney damage in high amounts. Neurotoxic effects such
as psychomotor disturbances, behavioral and cognitive disorders have been demonstrated in animal models
with low-dose exposure. Cadmium levels can be 6 times higher in soy formula compared to milk- based
formula. Cadmium is also found in cereals with the exposure of dietary cadmium from weaning diets up to
12 times higher in children fed infant formula compared to breast milk.
Genetically engineered corn and soy
Detected in Alsoy (Carnation/Nestle), Similac Neocare (Ross Labs), Isomil (Ross Labs), Prosobee (Mead
Johnson)
Transgenic ingredients pose the risk of introducing novel toxins, new allergens, and increased antibiotic
resistance to infants. The FDA does not require labeling of genetically engineered foods, so parents will
remain unaware that their baby is consuming transgenic ingredients

MSG (processed free glutamic acid and processed free aspartic acid)

These are known neurotoxins found in a number of infant formulas. Because the blood brain barrier is not
fully developed in infants, these neurotoxins are more accessible to the infant brain than the adult brain.
The highest levels of these neurotoxins were found in hypoallergenic formulas. Because no studies have
been done on the long term outcomes of infants fed on hypoallergenic formulas it is unknown if they
will exhibit more learning disabilities at school age, and/or more endocrine disorders such as obesity, and
reproductive disorders, later in life.

Phytoestrogens

Phytoestrogens are endocrine disruptors found in soy formulas. Infants fed soy formula can have circulating
phytoestrogen concentrations that are 13,000-22,000 times higher than normal levels in early life. These
bioactive compounds can create steroid hormone imbalance, compete with enzymes that metabolize steroids,
drugs and xenobiotics, and can influence gonadal function. Genistein can be carcinogenic if exposure
occurs during critical periods of differentiation. Soy formula has been linked to premature thelarche (breast
development in infants and girls under eight years of age). Phytoestrogens (isoflavones) also act on the
thyroid gland. They are well known inducers of goiter and anti-thyroid agents. They act against the thyroid
by inhibition of thyroid peroxidase. Children with autoimmune thyroid disease were three times more likely
to have been fed soy formula in infancy.

Phthalates and Bisphenol-A

These are endocrine disrupting industrial chemicals. Phthalates are used as plasticisers and are testicular
toxins as well as estradiol imitators.
Bisphenol-A is used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and has been found in plastic baby bottles.
It can leach from the container and has been known to be estrogenic since 1938. Bisphenol-A resins are
used as lacquers to coat metal products such as food cans. With a high affinity for fatty products, it has
been shown to leach into the content of cans during the autoclaving process, including cans of milk based
infant formula.
Contaminants in water used to reconstitute concentrated and powdered formula

Lead

Lead in water used to reconstitute formula can cause elevations in blood lead levels if used from the hot
water tap or boiled. Boiling concentrates lead. There is a 6 point IQ drop for every 10ug increase in blood
lead levels.

Nitrates

Infants fed formula reconstituted with nitrate-contaminated water are at risk for potentially fatal methemoglobinemia.
Nitrates are converted to nitrites by the baby resulting in hemoglobin being converted to
methemoglobin that cannot bind molecular oxygen. This risk increases if babies under six months are also
fed baby food with high concentrations of nitrates such as green beans and bananas.

Atrazine

Atrazine is a weed killer that causes mammary and uterine cancer in rats. In the cities and towns with
the worst tap water contamination, formula-fed babies who consume reconstituted formula would receive a
lifetime dose of this chemical in the first four months of their lives.

Bacteria

Significant bacterial contamination can occur during home preparation of powdered infant formula.
Reconstituted formula stored in the refrigerator shows increasing bacterial counts over time

makes me glad im a breastfeeder….but then again i was formula fed….i wonder how that affects my milk now…?

I’m looking for hats designed for premature babies with hydrocephalus?

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

My baby was a 24 wk preemie and has had a rough road. She has hydrocephalus resulting from 2 strokes seven days after birth. I would like to find some fashionable hats for her to wear, it seems that just buying bigger sized hats for infants doesn’t seem to fit her head right.
She is now 6 mo old and should be 9 weeks old. Her head circumference is in the 98th percentile which is very large and regular hats don’t fit. I can’t sew but would be greatful for info of available patterns to have some hats made.

i have 1yr old twin boys that were born 2months early.what should they b doing at this particular age?

Friday, September 18th, 2009

one twin is walking and says mama, dada, baba, while the other one is not quite independently walking but he claps his hand and also says a few words and may wave bye-bye sometimes.what exactly should a premature infant do at this age?

My son wasn’t doing any of that at that age, so your boys are developing just fine!

My son is 15 months next week and he JUST started walking this week. He says dada, but that’s it. And he just started waving about a month ago.

On average, how many ounces should my infant take per feeding?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

I had a 6 week premature daughter on Father’s Day, her actual to date age is 14 weeks old, but her adjusted age 8 weeks old.

As much as she wants as often as she wants. There is no set amount that a baby should eat. Every baby is different and some eat more then others. Let the baby eat until she’s full and feed her as often as she needs to eat.

My daughter ate 3-4 ounces every 2-3 hours for awhile and then started eating more per feeding but gradually spacing out to 4 hour intervals. it just depends on the baby. Feeding on demand is best though, it makes sure she’s getting enough, often enough.
