what milestones has your 4 month old met?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

my baby was born premature and his corrected age is just under 3 months, even though he is actually 4 months old today. he rolled over for the first time today and i was so proud! i am worried he will always be behind because of his prematurity. just curious if he is on track and i know every baby meets milestones at different ages

congrats on that milestone. at four months my son was crawling but he never actually picked up rolling over while awake. lol at 11 month he still cant do it but he is walking so i give him that.

Are prematurity and trouble conceiving genetic?

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Both my husband and I were born prematurely (he was 7 weeks and I was 12 weeks). Our daughter was born 18 weeks premature and sadly passed away. Then both our parents had trouble conceiving. It took us over a year to conceive our daughter and we’ve been TTC again since April.

Are these things just coincidences or genetic? This may be a stupid question for some of you but I really don’t know.

Most prematurity and trouble conceiving is not genetic. It is just chance. However, some is genetic. Not all members of the family will inherit the condition, although they inherit and pass on the damaged gene. You might, at some point, consider getting counseling from a genetic counselor. It might help to determine if you are conceiving just fine, but the pregnancy isn’t advancing vs. no conception at all.

If triplets are born, but one passes away…?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

If triplets are born but one of the babies passes on due to prematurity or some other natural cause, what are the two remaining babies called?

Are they still considered triplets or are they now twins?

They were born triplets, they’ll always be triplets legally. As a parent I’d say twins so I didn’t have to discuss a baby’s death anytime I met new people.

Are premature babies who suffered Retinopathy of Prematurity and went blind have any chance of seeing?

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Because of the state of medical technology in my country, doctors here are saying they can’t do anything anymore will it be the same in other countries like in Europe or US?

Possibly, depending on how long ago retinal detatchment occured. If the retina is detached, it must be reattached before sealing the retinal tear. There are three ways to repair retinal detachments. Pneumatic retinopexy involves injecting a special gas bubble into the eye that pushes on the retina to seal the tear. The scleral buckle procedure requires the fluid to be drained from under the retina before a flexible piece of silicone is sewn on the outer eye wall to give support to the tear while it heals. Vitrectomy surgery removes the vitreous gel from the eye, replacing it with a gas bubble, which is slowly replaced by the body’s fluids.

It’s also treatable befoe blindness occurs.Patients with early stages of ROP need observation; most of these eyes will return to normal development. If the disease progresses, treatment is considered. A multicenter research trial funded by the National Eye Institute showed that destroying the undeveloped retina with freezing treatments (cryotherapy) stopped the progression of the disease in about 50 percent of infants. This reduced the number of retinal detachments in severely affected eyes from about 50 to 25 percent.

Recently, laser has become the standard treatment to destroy the non-developed retina. It appears that laser treatment is at least as effective as the cryotherapy and has a lower rate of complication. However, despite treatment, a significant group of patients continue to worsen. These are the patients thatmay be helped with surgery for retinal detachment (scleral buckle or vitrectomy surgery).

Were any of these treatments provided?

Email or Im me, I’m interested to know more.

what cause women to have theire babies premature?

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

what cause a woman to have a premature baby ive seen so many premature videos on youtube woman be having babies at 20-34 weeks premature babies and almost none make it
im just curios to how babies are born so early is there anything a woman can do to prevent prematurity

Wow … there are a million reasons why babies are premature … and at my hospital babies that are 23 to 34 weeks survive … we see very little deaths in these populations …. obviously the 23 to 26 weeks have a tougher time ….

I think your best bet is to live a healthy lifestyle and make your prenatal visits … this would include taking your vitamins .. eating healthy … sleeping well … no smoking … drugs … alcohol .. no risky sexual behavior ….

all that said … women who do everything right can still have abnormal pregnancy … it is a blessing that we have so many normal deliveries … and you are blessed to be pregnant … and I would suggest that you only think positive thoughts … stress is a negative factor too … so keep your head high and know this is going to be a great pregnancy … and soon you will have the most wonderful vision of your future .. God Bless You .. and take care

Do premature babies do as well in school as full term?

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

My friend had a premature baby and he had a learning disability at school and she blames it on the prematurity. My baby was also premature so I wanted to know if anybody has went through this and had any problems with learning issues. My baby was born at 32 weeks.

both of my little brothers were premature. one was born at around 27weeks. he’s only 6 now but he is actually one of the faster learners i’ve seen. (i work with children). my other brother was born at around 33weeks (i think) and he learns just as fast.

premature birth won’t affect your child’s ability to learn. your child may have some "birth defects" (kinda harsh way to word it. sorry) caused by the premature birth and they may make it harder for your child to learn. but being born early itself does not.

My 4 month old son is in the 7th percentile for height, does this mean that he’s going to be short?

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

He was born 6 weeks early and I would think that its because of that and he just has some catching up to do, but his pediatrican said it doesn’t have anything to do with his prematurity. They measured him at 23 1/2 inches today and said that it was within the 7th percentile.
His weight was 14.5 lbs (25-50th percentile.)
I’m not tall, but not super short about 5′4.
My husband is 6 feet.

Not to worry… it’s difficult to predict what the height when they are infants. Most pediatricians can give you a good idea how tall a child will be when they turn 2 years of age… listen to your doctor "it doesn’t have anything to do with his prematurity."
For now enjoy your little man and patiently wait for your baby to turn 2 to get an accurate answer:)
