What developmental difficulties can a 26 week preemie face growing up?
If a child is born at 26 weeks gestation, is the child likely to have many health issues? If so, what? What about learning disabilities? Mental retardation?
I haven’t had a preemie myself, but I have a cousin who was born at about that time and she’s 16 now. You would *never* know she was a preemie to look at her. I’ve heard that most preemies catch up by age two, but again, not personal experience.

Nothing naturally, honestly. I was born at 28 weeks very healthy, and I’m an honors studennt in college. lol There are possible complications from lack of proper care though.

It depends on the situation. If the mother is given the steroid shots to help the baby’s lungs develop more then the outlook is good all the way around. My niece is a 26 wk preemie, a happy 5 year old today. The steroid shots made a big difference. She did have a big setback. When she was 3 days old she had a stomach bleed and infection she almost died from it and her weight gain was slow until she was 9 months old and they could do the big surgery. Children are very resilient. I think the biggest concern for the future is blindness and deafness. She does have to wear glasses but that’s the only lasting problem from her ordeal.

Not always I believe if nothing else but early delivery then I’m sure that your baby will be find. Don’t stress over it.

as long as the baby got oxygen ASAP then they should be fine just a long time in the hospital to get them eating and gaining enough weight and breathing on their own - the mental defects tend to happen with lack of oxygen

hi. my oldest son who is now nearly 3 in march was born at 27 weeks.
h is a normal happy healthy boy.
although he did face a lot of problems his ears and eyes had to have regular checkups during the year, he was delayed in milstones, he didnt crawl/sit up/walk till he was wel over a year.
he has diffculty understanding some things and communicating sometimes compared to children his age.
he cannot put sentences together and his speech is delayed.
but all of these are minor things and he will catch up soon nough they are not long term problems.
i thank god that he is healthy and happy compared to when he was born he was the size off my hand and we were prepared for the worst.
every baby is different and i think it depends on the reason the baby was born premature but premature babies are now getting the best chance of survival.xx
