More multiple births and premature babies being born in the 80’s?
More premature babies born back in the 80’s now have eye problems, and are now having babies.
These multiple births and more mutiple births makes me curious, all these fertility drugs these days.
What gives?
I’m not sure what you’re asking, but multiple births are very often preemies and often caused by fertility treatments. The doctors aren’t very honest about the situation. Also, women are having babies later, therefore, more issues like prematurity.
There is an eye problem called Retinopathy of Prematurity where the retina lifts or detaches. It usually occurs in early preemies. Now there is a laser surgery that (to put it simply) tacks the retina down. Cryotherapy was used before that. It’s not perfect, but better than the alternative. Stevie Wonder was premature and had ROP which caused his blindness. These treatments were not available when he was born.

Hmmm…I never even noticed that. I was born in the 80’s but I was 11 days late. I have minor eye problems- I might not even need glasses. Most of the people I know were born in the 80’s and they’re only children, etc. Where did you hear this?

What exactly are you asking?
Yes, the use of fertility drugs did (and still does, to some extent) increase the number of mulitple births — and multiples are more likely to be premature and have the health problems that are common among premies.
But there is no evidence that those health problems will be passed on to the next generation, so THEIR children should be healthy.
And, fortunately, stricter guidelines for fertility clinics mean that fewer parents are having high-order multiples (GOOD clinics no longer put back 4-6 eggs in the hopes that one will ‘take.’) Most high order multiples occur in couples using ordinary fertility drugs — and then not following the doctor’s orders when he tells them to NOT try this month because there are too many eggs. (Or, in some cases, the doctor doesn’t monitor them properly, so they don’t know how many eggs there are.)

I wasn’t able to find any statistical info on a rise in eye problems related to fertility drug use - it seems like a stretch. You’d have to control for any number of variables.
We do know that multiple births have increased, but we also know that responsible doctors work to avoid high-order multiple births. As we learn more about fertility treatments, we’ll probably see fewer triplets and up. We’re all sensible about the risks to mother and babies.
And twins and singletons are likely to be full-term … and thus avoid the possibility of vision impairment.
When a couple really wants a child, they often feel it’s worth the risk. I don’t think that a risk of poor vision would deter anyone from pursuing a medical intervention that could make them parents.

Personally, I am thankful for fertility drugs. Clomid helped me have my TWINS!! Granted, one of them does need glasses but I;d gladly take a baby that needs glasses over NO BABY anyday!
