Premature babies and surviving?
I have heard a lot of questions about premature babies tonight. Well anyways, I was wondering whats the earliest a baby has been delivered and survived? Just wondering….. I am not planning on having a premature baby or anything, I am not even pregnant, its more of a curiosity-meaning no mean comments! Thanks everyone, have a great night. Thanks!
22 weeks, but there are a lot of unconfirmed cases, so it’s hard to get that information nailed down especially when they live in a different country.
fyi, For a fighting chance with less complications? 28 weeks.
It’s so hard on the little ones and their families. It’s good that you have this curiosity….gives me hope!
I was a preme of almost 2 months. My lungs weren’t fully developed and I had sezures when I was 2. I’m now 16 and healthy.

I think while I was pregnant I read something that said that a baby can’t survive outside the womb until they are at least (I can’t remember if it said 24 or 28) weeks. They had a lot of shows on the Discovery Health Channel today about premature babies and pregnancy complications - maybe why so many questions popping up now?

Even at 37 weeks a baby can die shortly after the birth due to lung prematurity.
“Prematurity is one of the greatest public health problems in the United States today. More than one out of ten births is premature, or about half a million annually. Half of all deaths to children before their first birthday are due to pregnancy-related factors; nine out of ten of these births are due to prematurity and its complications. Premature babies - preemies - are more than merely small. They are developmentally unprepared for life outside the uterus. If they survive, they are more likely to have problems with growth and development, which can result in physical and mental disabilities.
For example, children who were born premature are more likely to have respiratory problems during childhood, as well as a higher incidence of learning disabilities and problems with speech, hearing and vision. The more premature the infant, the greater the risk of physical and developmental problems during childhood. Despite modern technology, there is no substitute for full term gestation. While no one can guarantee that your pregnancy will not be premature, by taking the best possible care of yourself and reducing whatever risks you can, you will greatly improve your chances of having a healthy, well-grown baby born at term.

well my daughter was born two moths premature and she is almost a healthy baby now she has to have heart surgery she is 8 months old, but it is not do to her being premature it is due to her having a rare syndrome called Marfan Syndrome a mutation in her cromosones, but the surgery is successful over 95%, so my little one i would say is a survivor.

I know I’ve heard of some 12 oz at birth babies surviving. Currently, we are praying that my second cousin’s 13 oz baby survives (and survives well). She’s doing well, the last I heard.

When my doc talked to me about my possable preterm labor at 21 weeks and 6 days he told me that the baby would not survive if born that early that the earliest she would survive would be at 24 weeks and even then she has only a 50% chance of survival. I am now 27 weeks and 3 days I heard my daughter chances of survival are now up to 88% and of course from there it just keeps getting better.
