scrapbook, sleep, clean. Heck come over and help her clean and scrapbook.

I had twins in the NICU, although they are not my first children it was a bit easier for me. But i know for some parents its much more harder to leave their babies behind. Tell her to pick a time of day and to visit the baby at those times, The nurses told me its ok to call and to check on the baby they're there 24-7 and can answer any calls or questions or concerns when shes away. She can visit 2 times a day even.

The biggest thing is that shes taking care of herself its so easy to stress over the baby and forget to eat and take care of oneself. Its not an easy journey. Tell her that caringbridge is a place she can set up a blog and keep a journal of all that is happening and share it with family and friends the status of her baby. Its not an easy thing, but she can also use this time as a time to set up a nursery and prepare for the new baby to come home. Its not easy but its just keeping the person busy. She doesn't know yet but at a new mom she should be using this time to sleep. And catch up on sleep before shes going months without it. FOr me i cleaned like a mad woman i nested before but couldnt do anything due tot he twin pregnancy and being so big, after they were born and i was dealing with the c-section i cleaned and moved furnature like a mad woman!
References :
Hopefully she's involved with a church group. Call her church and ask the members to set up a schedule of visits. One visitor per day should come and sit for a minimum of 2 hours. He/she should bring some soap/shampoo/lotion/lip balm, etc and allow the mom to leave the area to shower. Should also bring money to take mom to lunch in the cafeteria OR (most preferred) bring a baked dish or home cooked meal or carry out from a nice restaurant.

Bring her old magazines or even new ones...pick one up at the grocery store.
References :
my son was in the nicu when he was born too and i felt the same they wouldn't even allow me to be in the room when the doctor was looking at him or didn't warn me about the tubes they put in him just left me to find all the thins out on my own, i cried nearly all the time the only thing that kept me going was that my dad was in hospital at the same time so i spent any time i couldn't with him that i couldn't with my son

i don't really think there is much you can do you will feel lonely and sad no matter what i think you should just be there for your friend and maybe take your friend shopping or some thing for new clothes or baby clothes

look it will be hard i hope the baby will be ok and
tell your friend good luck

She can start scrapbooking her pregnancy followed with her son in the NICU. It's good to have a creative outlet right now and it will take up a good chunk of time.

She might also take a sewing/knitting class or start working out.
References :
We were lucky, they let us stay with our daughter in NICU (24/7 if we wanted). But even while there, alot of reading, took a couple of board games with us (crib worked well as it is very portable).

When we did leave the hospital for a few hours, we went shopping for baby supplies, we also would just walk in the park (it is amazing how much than can lift a persons spirits).

One of the most important things we found was to keep in touch with people (our families were 150 miles away), so we called each person & also updated our facebook pages. It is amazing how supportive than can be. Also just having my spouse there was huge, I don't think I would have made it thru her hospital stay without good communication and support from him.
References :
Work on the baby book
Develop pictures of him
Buy preemie outfits for when they let him wear clothes
Organize the nursery at home
Try to rest, cause that'll be harder once the baby comes home
