What does a chromosome abnormality’ mean? It was due to the premature birth.?
Apparently there was something wrong with the chromosomes - why would it have caused a premature birth? If my friends baby had survived (born at 28 weeks - 20 years ago), would there be any long term effects?
Thanks!
could be downs syndrome or Trisomy 18

A chromosome abnormality means that something was wrong with the baby. Very likely, this problem also affected the growth of the placenta. It all depends on what the abnormality was.
Downs Syndrome is one example of chromosomal abnormality. If your friend wants more information, she should write for her medical report from the hospital and include a request for information on the infant who passed.

i’ve had 3 miscarriages and with each one the doctors told me it was a chromosone abnormality
the baby didnt have the correct chromosones to actually ‘grow’ properly and it would have been severely disabled if it did survive

a chromosome abnormality can mean a whole lot of things, from an extra chromosome, to a piece of the chromosome being flipped, removed, switched with a piece of a different chromosome, or duplicated. depending on the kind, size and location, it can have no affect, cause a syndrome (such as Down Syndrome), cause a short life span with many health problems, cause still-birth, late pregnancy miscarriage, early pregnancy miscarriage, or even have the fertilized egg aborted within a few hours of conception.
in the case of it causing sever prematurity, I would guess that it would have had many effects, and possibly even if the baby was born today they would only have made it a few weeks.

The chromosome abnormality would cause a premature birth sometimes. Usually they mean by chromosome abnormality, they mean there was something wrong with one of the chromosomes that either the mother or the father gave to the child that was a bad one. There was some defect with a chromosome or there may have been one too many or one less than what was needed. Or something happened during the time when the sperm met the egg. If the chromosomes are screwed up it causes problems for the child that will usually last a lifetime.
The body depends on those chromosomes, it gives the child the basic structure of how the child will look. It’s part of the DNA pretty much. When the chromosomes are messed up, it messes everything up. These chromosomes are throughout the body and in every cell. Cells in your body reproduce and more DNA is made etc. Since all the cells are messed up, the child will have some issues growing up.
Usually chromosome abnormalities cause things like stillbirth, miscarriage, downs syndrome, premature birth, Patau syndrome, etc.

most likely there would have been effects, as it must have been something vital for her to have it so premature….
