What other treatments would a Jehovah’s witness allow?
I am doing a project for my nursing class over an ethical dilemma. The dilemma that I decided on is a premature infant born to a family of Jehovah’s witnesses is in need of a blood transfusion or he will die. I know the obvious solutions are don’t give the transfusion or give it but to comply with the family’s wishes can other treatments be allowed? For instance can the family donate the blood to the infant or can other blood enhancers be used? Whatever suggestions would be helpful!
Let’s start with some non-JW-sources (I apologize for the ad)… ALSO NOTE:

First of all the medical doctors are not God, you can not say the baby will die with out or live with. If I was the parents I would demand you sign a contract saying 100% the baby will live if given a blood transfusion. This way if you went to court and gave the baby a blood transfusion and it died I could sue you. I know of a family in California who had twins born premature and one was given a blood transfushion by court order and this baby lived to about 4 yrs old and died of A.I.D’s contracted through the blood transfushion. The other twin who was not given a tranfushion lived and is just fine even though both twins suffered the same premature issues. The parents do not know why one was and one was not given blood.
My mom is a J.W and there is no room for storing your own blood and using it later. Also my mom was advised to abort a baby during her pregnancy as test showed te baby would be badly deformed and retarded, having low to no quality of life. My mom listens to God not man and she did not get the abortion done. My sister was born she is very healthy she is so pretty and she was married a couple years ago her and her husband are very happy and the family is going strong. My sister is a model as well as graduated from school when she was 16 started college at 17 and recently recived her masters degree. None of this would have happened if my mom followed her doctors orders.
The basic belife of JW’s is life they preach about it all the time and the imaginary parents in your project being true JW’s will not allow a blood tansfushion. A doctor can not save a life they can prolong a life as we will all get old and die one day anyway. The only one who can save a life is God and JW’s work to gain life from God the life giver.
Now I know due to medical reasons many non JW’s will go in for surgery and lie and say they are a JW to have bloodless surgery. I went in for surgery and refused blood and a JW came to talk to me thinking I was a JW I said I was not at the time but my mom was and she was very nice and asisted with bloodless surgery in the hospital. ALL major hospitals have a bloodless surgery program now. Surgeons who perform surgeries when going for their own surgery often opt for bloodless. Blood of another person’s throws the body into shock and it trys to reject it, you heal quicker with out putting extra shock on your body.
The surgery I was facing is a very bloody surgery and it was years ago but I would not take blood, the doctors were fine with this but one of the nurse’s was very angry by this. I think when people remove their personal opinions from something so personal as a clients medical treatment hospitals will do much better. I will say this the nurse being evil and rude to me also trying to trick me into signing a paper saying they could give me blood as well as perform a total hysterectomy (I did not need) Caused some major trouble for the hospital as well as made me go talk to JW’s and learn more about the ideas behind this. The ideas are not just some pulled out of a hat, they are very solid backed by many doctors thought of as experts in their field the U of M and other top universities are in full support of this it is medical advancment now no longer just religious freedom, and it all came about because J.W’s follow the bibles ideals and not Gods.
