Warnings for Rocephin

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Roche Laboratories is warning about the danger of administering the antibiotic Rocephin (ceftriaxone sodium) along with IV products that contain calcium, such as parenteral nutrition, because harmful precipitates can occur.

The labeling describes cases of fatal reactions in neonates where precipitates were found in the infants’ lungs or kidneys. In some of these cases, the Rocephin and the calcium-containing solutions were administered through different infusion lines or at different times. Even though there are no reported cases of these precipitates in patients other than neonates, there’s a potential for this type of interaction in patients of any age.

Because particulates could form, the labeling now says:

– Don’t reconstitute or mix Rocephin with products that contain calcium. These include Ringer’s solution, Hartmann’s solution and parenteral nutrition formulations with calcium.

– Don’t administer Rocephin at the same time as calcium-containing solutions, even if they’re delivered through different infusion lines.

– Don’t administer Rocephin and solutions that contain calcium with within 48 hours of each other.

There are no data on whether Rocephin might interact with calcium-containing products that are given orally. It is also not clear whether intramuscular Rocephin might interact with calcium-containing products, either IV or oral.

The labeling also reemphasizes that neonates with hyperbilirubinemia should not be treated with Rocephin, especially premature neonates. That’s because in vitro studies have shown that Rocephin, like some other cephalosporins, can displace bilirubin from its binding to serum albumin, and that could result in bilirubin encephalopathy.

In Memory of Baby Ella Rose Cook July 17, 2008

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Baby Ella was born on July 17, 2008. Four days earlier I had been admitted to the hospital as I spontaneously dilated and Ella’s water sac had begun descending into the canal at just 21 weeks gestation. I was told by many to just “get it over with” and begin induction as Ella would not likely live. However, my wonderful husband and I would not choose certain death when I had the option to lie in the hospital in the trendelinberg position to ease the water sac back through the cervix. After 48 hours of doing so, there was no change in my condition. Ella was still exposed to infection as was myself, but we were not about to give up. Two more days went by and we hung onto the hope that something would change. However, the only thing that did was that Ella and I now had an infection and there was no way to turn back the clock for her. My wonderful doctor (who was the only medical professional who refused to give up on us) delivered the news on that Thursday around 12:40pm. It was no longer my duty to try to save Ella…if we wanted to see her alive, we would have to deliver her as soon as possible. With my family beside me, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl who was perfect in every way. My husband and I baptized her immediately and we witnessed her tiny body move and her delicate hand grasp the ring that her daddy tried to place on her fingers…she was so strong. And Ella began to suck on my finger as I brushed it against her tiny cheek. It was a beautiful experience that we enjoyed for 20 minutes until it was time for God to take her home. This video was played at her funeral and we want to share our baby with everyone we can…what a gift we had. Mommy and Daddy love you, Ella Rose! xoxoxoxoxo

When the Bough Breaks: Kim Anderson’s Story

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

When Atlanta lawyer Kim Anderson was pregnant with her first child, she did everything right: she ate a healthy diet, exercised, and got the best prenatal care. But her baby was born almost three months premature. How could this have happened? Some researchers believe that racism may play a role in unusually high rates of premature birth in the African-American community.

Excerpt from Episode 2 of “UNNATURAL CAUSES: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?”, a ground-breaking documentary series that looks at how the social, economic and physical environments in which we are born, live, and work profoundly affect our longevity and health. The series broadcast nationally on PBS in spring 2008, and can be bought on DVD from California Newsreel, www.newsreel.org

Stillbirth & Prematurity: Remember Ava Grace

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

30,000 babies die from Stillbirth in the USA every year… compare that to the 2,000 that die to SIDS. Causes of Infant Mortality like SIDS or Prematurity receive a tremendous amount of funding for research and support. Important support includes not only research funding but also public awareness.

My daughter was a victim of both prematurity and stillbirth. I support both causes. I am however more outraged by the lack of support for stillbirth. Parents of stillborns are treated like lepers. As if their child never existed. If my baby had taken one breath and then died I would have been treated an entirely different way. Change needs to be made… And change will only come when the public is educated and OUTRAGED.

Help these parents… these babies by Favoriting this video… send it to someone you know. Learn the facts.
